LIVE ACTIVITY
The Vibe
Buckman is dense, diverse, and close-in, blending historic residential streets with warehouses, makers' spaces, and busy commercial corridors. The energy is urban and varied.
Walkable to downtown and threaded by several lively east-side streets, the neighborhood feels at once gritty and creative, with old Portland houses sitting near new apartments and converted industrial buildings.
History
Buckman is one of Portland's oldest east-side neighborhoods, occupying the close-in district just across the Willamette River from downtown. Named for an early schoolteacher, it was among the first parts of the east side to develop, filling in densely during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries with houses, apartments, churches, and industry. Its grid of streets and mix of building types reflect that early, intense growth.
The neighborhood spans a wide range, from the leafy residential blocks of its eastern and southern reaches to the industrial and warehouse zone along the river's edge near the Central Eastside. East Burnside and Southeast Morrison, Belmont, and Hawthorne corridors all run through or border Buckman, giving it multiple commercial spines.
Today Buckman is a dense, walkable, and increasingly mixed neighborhood, home to historic homes, repurposed warehouses, the city's industrial Central Eastside, and a steady stream of new development drawn by its proximity to downtown.
