LIVE ACTIVITY
The Vibe
Multnomah Village has a charming, old-fashioned main-street feel, with independent boutiques, cafes, pubs, and a well-loved bookstore packed into a few walkable blocks. It draws people from across southwest Portland who come to browse, dine, and stroll.
Beyond the village core, the neighborhood settles into quiet residential streets shaded by mature trees, blending small-town charm with leafy comfort.
History
Multnomah, widely known by its commercial heart as Multnomah Village, grew up around a stop on the Oregon Electric Railway in the early twentieth century. The rail line drew settlement to this corner of southwest Portland, and a small business district formed along what is now Capitol Highway to serve the surrounding farms and growing residential streets.
For much of its history the area was a distinct community apart from Portland proper, with its own town center, before the city expanded around it. That early village core survived as a walkable cluster of older storefronts, giving the neighborhood a rare sense of preserved small-town character within the city.
Today Multnomah Village is one of southwest Portland's most beloved destinations, a compact district of independent shops, restaurants, and bookstores surrounded by quiet, tree-lined residential streets.
