About
Markham occupies a quiet strip of Southwest Portland between the commercial activity of Multnomah Village and Barbur Blvd to the north and the deeper residential forest of Arnold Creek to the south. Its boundaries touch Multnomah and South Burlingame on the north, Marshall Park on the east, Arnold Creek on the south, and West Portland Park on the west — making it one of the most nature-flanked neighborhoods in the SWNI coalition.
The Maricara Natural Area anchors the neighborhood's southern edge — a protected mixed evergreen-deciduous forest with wetlands, native plants, older second-growth trees, and a stream. Marigold HydroPark provides additional green infrastructure. The combination of these preserved natural areas with the neighborhood's low-density residential fabric gives Markham a sense of remove from urban intensity that belies its location within Portland city limits.
Markham has historically been one of Portland's quieter neighborhood associations — coordinating through Southwest Neighborhoods Inc. without the high-profile development controversies that have animated some of its neighbors. Residents value the neighborhood for its access to both the Barbur Blvd commercial corridor and the network of natural areas that begin literally at some back fences.
Boundaries: Bordered by Multnomah and South Burlingame to the north, Marshall Park to the east, Arnold Creek to the south, and West Portland Park to the west. Situated between I-5 and SW Capitol Hwy corridors.
The Vibe
Markham is quiet, green, and residential, a southwest neighborhood where the streets curve through wooded hillsides and daily life centers on home and school. It suits families looking for a settled, low-traffic base with reasonable access to nearby districts.
The atmosphere is relaxed and unhurried, with little commercial bustle and plenty of tree cover.
History
Markham occupies a residential stretch of southwest Portland, named for Edwin Markham, the poet, and home to the elementary school that shares the name. The area developed through the twentieth century as part of the broad residential expansion across the city's southwestern hills.
Like its neighbors, Markham filled in gradually along streets that follow the contours of the terrain, away from major commercial corridors. Its growth was shaped by the same hilly geography that defines much of southwest Portland, producing a patchwork of lots and a quiet, residential grain.
Today Markham remains a calm residential neighborhood, valued for its trees, its tucked-away streets, and its access toward Multnomah Village, Barbur Boulevard, and the southwest suburbs.
