The Vibe

What Sellwood-Moreland Feels Like

Charming riverside village with Antique Row

Sellwood-Moreland has the warm, village-like feel of a small town that happens to sit inside a city. Antique shops, cafes, bakeries, and independent stores line the commercial strips along Thirteenth and Milwaukie Avenues, and the riverfront parks give the neighborhood an airy, recreational quality.

The residential streets are leafy and well-tended, full of restored older homes and front gardens. With its parks, amusement park, and walkable shopping districts, the neighborhood feels both nostalgic and lively.

History

How Sellwood-Moreland Came To Be

Sellwood-Moreland combines two historic communities in the southeast corner of Portland near the Willamette River. Sellwood began as an independent town named for the Reverend John Sellwood, developing in the late nineteenth century around riverfront industry and a streetcar line before being annexed by Portland in 1893. Moreland, to the north, grew slightly later as a planned residential addition.

Sellwood's early prosperity came from its position on the river and its rail connections, and the neighborhood retained a self-contained, small-town character with its own commercial district along Southeast Thirteenth Avenue. That stretch later became famous as "Antique Row" for its concentration of antique shops, drawing visitors from across the region.

Through the twentieth century the combined neighborhood matured into one of Southeast Portland's most charming districts, prized for its well-preserved early homes, its riverfront parks, and the landmark Sellwood Bridge connecting it to the west side. The Westmoreland commercial area along Milwaukie Avenue added another walkable hub of shops and restaurants.
