The Vibe

What Cully Feels Like

Diverse, spread-out, community-rooted neighborhood

Cully is diverse, down-to-earth, and spread out, with a mix of older homes, newer development, and pockets of open and green space. It has a strong sense of community and a less polished, more lived-in feel than the inner Northeast neighborhoods.

The area is known for its cultural diversity, community organizing, and a growing network of parks and natural areas that give it an unexpectedly green character.

History

How Cully Came To Be

Cully is a large neighborhood in Northeast Portland that developed later and more loosely than the streetcar suburbs to its west. Much of the area was annexed into the city in the mid twentieth century, and parts of it retained a semi-rural quality, with larger lots, unpaved streets, and even small farms persisting well into the modern era.

This pattern of development left Cully with a distinctive mix of housing and a patchwork of open land. Over the decades it became one of Portland's most ethnically and economically diverse neighborhoods, home to large Latino, immigrant, and working-class communities.

In recent years Cully has been the focus of significant community-led investment in parks, housing, and green space, even as it faces pressures from rising costs across the city.
