— South Tabor, Portland
About
South Tabor occupies the broad residential plateau east of Mount Tabor, first platted in the 1880s as Portland's streetcar lines pushed into the southeast hills. The neighborhood takes its name from the dormant volcanic butte that forms its western horizon — though the park itself sits in the adjacent Mt. Tabor neighborhood, South Tabor residents benefit from the green buffer and the distinctive skyline it creates. Development came steadily in the early 20th century, filling in with craftsman bungalows and four-squares along quiet tree-lined streets that still define the character today.
Franklin High School, a handsome 1914 building at SE 52nd and Woodward, has long served as the neighborhood's civic anchor. Its alumni include notable Portlanders across several generations, and its campus grounds serve as de facto parkland for the surrounding blocks. The neighborhood is served by Southeast Uplift and its own South Tabor Neighborhood Association, which coordinates resources, hosts an annual neighborhood cleanup, and maintains a directory of local services. A City Repair intersection mural at SE 61st and Clinton adds a distinctive burst of color to an otherwise understated streetscape.
Commercial life in South Tabor hugs its border streets: Division to the north carries the overflow of the Division Street food corridor, while SE 82nd Avenue to the east hosts a mix of immigrant-owned restaurants, auto shops, and small retail that reflects Portland's most culturally diverse corridor. Inner streets are almost entirely single-family, giving South Tabor some of the lowest traffic volumes of any close-in southeast Portland neighborhood. The result is a genuinely quiet, family-friendly enclave with easy bike access to everything the broader SE has to offer.
Boundaries: Bounded by SE Division St to the north, SE Powell Blvd to the south, SE 52nd Ave to the west, and SE 82nd Ave to the east. Adjacent to Richmond (west/north), Mt. Tabor (northwest), Montavilla (northeast), Centennial (east), and Woodstock (south).
The Vibe
South Tabor is a quiet, residential neighborhood with an easygoing, family-friendly feel. The streets are lined with modest homes and gardens, and the green slopes of Mount Tabor rise just to the north, offering a quick escape into the park.
Without a commercial core of its own, the neighborhood draws on the lively corridors nearby, giving residents a peaceful home base within walking or biking distance of Division Street's restaurants and the trails of Mount Tabor.
History
South Tabor occupies the gentle slopes below the southern flank of Mount Tabor in Southeast Portland. The neighborhood developed in the streetcar era and the decades that followed as a quiet residential district, filling in with modest homes on a regular grid as the city expanded eastward.
Unlike its more famous neighbors, South Tabor grew up largely as an unassuming, family-oriented area without a major commercial center of its own, relying on the nearby corridors of Division, Powell, and the Mount Tabor area for shops and services. Its development continued steadily through the first half of the twentieth century with bungalows, cottages, and later ranch-style homes.
In recent decades the revitalization of the Division Street corridor along the neighborhood's northern edge has brought new restaurants and amenities within easy reach, while South Tabor itself has retained the calm, residential character that has long defined it.
