About

Sumner

Sumner is a small NE Portland neighborhood that most Portlanders can't place on a map — and that suits its residents just fine. Stretching from NE Skidmore Street south to the Columbia Slough, and from 82nd Avenue to I-205, the neighborhood sits at the base of a retired volcanic cinder cone, giving elevated parts of Sumner views of Mount Hood and Mount St. Helens that are rare this close to the city. Sandy Blvd slices through the neighborhood diagonally — the city's great northeast commercial artery — and divides a residential south from an industrial and commercial north.

Most of Sumner's businesses line Sandy Blvd and 82nd Avenue south of it. Stan's Food & Deli at 5020 NE 82nd Ave has been a neighborhood institution for over 50 years, serving the kind of no-frills counter food that anchors working-class communities. Namaste Indian Cuisine at 8303 NE Sandy Blvd has been drawing regulars since 2001 with its buffet and sit-down service. The Sumner Association of Neighbors (SAN) is a City-recognized neighborhood organization that focuses on maintaining Sumner's residential character against commercial and industrial encroachment from I-205 and the Sandy Blvd strip.

Boundaries: NE 82nd Ave (west), I-205 (east), NE Skidmore St (south), Columbia Slough (north). Adjacent: Parkrose (west/north), Argay (east), Russell (south).

The Vibe

What Sumner Feels Like

Quiet, low-key residential pocket

Sumner is a quiet, practical residential neighborhood without much fanfare — modest homes, low traffic on its interior streets, and an everyday Portland feel. It's the kind of place that prioritizes neighborhood calm over commercial buzz.

Its position near the city's northeastern edge gives it convenient access to arterials and the Columbia corridor while keeping a settled, low-key character.

History

How Sumner Came To Be

Sumner is a modest residential neighborhood in Northeast Portland, set in the broad, relatively flat lands between the Cully area and the Columbia Slough. Like much of this part of the city, it developed gradually through the twentieth century as Portland expanded eastward and northward, with single-family homes filling in along its grid of streets.

The neighborhood sits near important arterials including Northeast Killingsworth Street and the corridors leading toward the airport and the Columbia River industrial areas. Its location away from the older streetcar suburbs gave it a quieter, more spread-out residential pattern, with a mix of housing built across the mid and late twentieth century.

Today Sumner remains a quiet, unassuming neighborhood, one of the lesser-known residential pockets of Northeast Portland that offers everyday affordability and proximity to the Columbia corridor.
